About this test

6 min to complete
Available in EN, ES, RU

The timed exam for your driver’s permit consists of 25 multiple-choice questions that must be answered within 25 minutes, and the test can only be passed with a 72% or better. The knowledge test is based on the 2024 Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, and is offered on a computer system in English and Spanish. Questions will concentrate on traffic laws, road signage, safe driving techniques, and driving under the influence. To take the written knowledge exam and receive your learner’s permit, you’ll need to be at least 16 years of age, take a vision test, provide proper identification, and pay a $30 permit fee. At the RMV, you’ll need to bring proof of identification and state residency, then provide your signature and a parental signature on your permit application if you’re a minor. If you need to retake the written test, you can retest as many times as necessary, but you’ll need to repay the $30 permit testing fee each time. Use this RMV practice test to help you pass on your first try.
